HealthInno hosts New Mexico’s first health innovation summit, HealthAI

On October 28, 2025, we hosted HealthAI—New Mexico’s first health innovation summit—to bring healthcare executives, technologists, researchers, startup founders, and policy leaders together for a full day focused on how AI and digital tools are shaping the future of care in our state and beyond.

Why this matters

New Mexico faces unique healthcare challenges — rural access gaps, workforce shortages, high rates of chronic disease — and nowhere near enough tailored innovation with local impact. HealthAI was designed to ground AI and innovation in real‑world healthcare, to ask: How do we build solutions that meet our communities where they are?

Highlights of the Day

Here are some of the standout moments:

  • The summit opened with sessions on “Innovation & Impact” and “Myth‑busting: AI Hype vs. Reality,” setting a tone of realism and possibility.

  • A panel of executive healthcare leaders discussed what it takes to put AI into active use in hospitals and clinics.

  • Deep dives into infrastructure: One breakout explored “Building the Backbone: Health IT Leaders on AI Readiness.” The conversation centered on data systems, interoperability, and the policies that enable or block AI traction in the field.

  • A “Student Poster Showcase” brought emerging innovators into the mix—inviting fresh ideas and linking them to experienced mentors and investors.

  • Networking reception post‑program, giving attendees time to connect, forge partnerships, and talk beyond slide decks.

We also announced our new Health Data Innovators Bootcamp

At the summit, we also announced the launch of our Health Data Innovators Bootcamp—a new program designed to support healthcare professionals, technologists, and researchers who want to deepen their skills in health data and turn insights into real-world solutions, launched in partnership with CNM Ingenuity’s Deep Dive.

The bootcamp prepares students for real-world careers in health data, interoperability, and HIMSS CAHIMS exam, perfect for early-career technologists or healthcare practitioners building data or tech skills.

The Community Dimension

This summit was designed to be more than just a tech event. The people in the room reflected the diversity of New Mexico’s ecosystem: health system leaders, rural providers, students, funders, policy thinkers, and technologists.

Equity, access, and local context were through-lines in every conversation. From broadband to bias in algorithms, we talked about the work it takes to get innovation right.

And the gathering truly reflected a community‑building mindset: seasoned leaders alongside startups, technologists alongside clinicians, students alongside policymakers. HealthInno’s role here is as a convener—bringing together parts of the ecosystem that usually aren’t at the same events.

What’s Next

This summit is just the beginning. We’re continuing to build spaces where healthcare and tech leaders can connect, learn, and collaborate—with a focus on what matters most to New Mexico’s communities.

We’re thinking about:

  • More events and programs connecting health tech and policy in New Mexico.

  • A call‑out to keep pushing beyond our big cities—to rural health, frontier tech, and interoperable data systems that serve smaller providers and underserved populations.

  • Our next agenda is likely to build on this: more cross-sector conversations, more peer-to-peer learning, more opportunities for collaboration, and more examples of innovation in action—especially for our healthcare colleagues.

How to Get Involved

If you’re working in healthcare, research, policy, or tech—and you care about the future of care in New Mexico—there’s a place for you in this community.

We’re building a health innovation ecosystem that’s collaborative, practical, and focused on impact. There’s real opportunity here: fewer legacy systems to untangle, deep need across the state, and a growing network of people ready to build smarter solutions that actually reach the people who need them.

Whether you're based in New Mexico or just care about solving the right problems in the right places, now’s the time to plug in.

Our Takeaways

Walking through the day, what felt most meaningful was how practical and community‑driven the discussions were. Yes, we talked about AI and futuristic tech—but the dominant questions were: How do we make it work for New Mexico? How do we support rural providers? How do we build trust? How do we make data work for the people who need care the most? That focus gives us real optimism for what can happen next.

Thanks for following along—excited to keep building this with you. See you at the next event!
